An accomplished student, she received a four-year scholarship to Texas College in Tyler, TX. She received her bachelor's degree in Education and French from Texas College in 1937. She remained at Texas College to teach French and English until 1942, when she returned to Dallas to begin teaching English at Booker T. Washington High School. At Booker T., she organized the first French class for black students in DISD, while also serving as a drama coach and sponsor of school plays.

Ms. Anderson received her Master's Degree in French and Comparative Literature from Atlanta University in 1946 and studied Drama and Play Directing at Columbia University, New York City in 1948. From 1954 to 1972, she taught French and English at Lincoln High School. In 1972, she accepted a position as Foreign Language Department Chair at Skyline High School, overseeing instruction of nine languages. She retired from Dallas schools when she was teaching English and French at Adamson High School in 1975.

Ms. Anderson had the opportunity to study and teach around the world. From 1959 to 1960, she studied at the Alliance Francaise in Paris, France and taught English at Hosea De Diego High School in Puerto Rico. In 1970, she studied Spanish at Universidad International de Cultura in Saltillo, Mexico. After retiring in 1975, Ms. Anderson taught English at Christ for the Nations Institute in Oak Cliff until 1980.

A dedicated member of her community and her church, Ms. Anderson was highly involved in the Cedar Crest CME Church and local organizations. She was active with the Dallas Branch of the Alliance of Black School Educators, Dallas Retired Teachers Association, and the Lincoln High School and Texas College Alumni Associations. She also was a life member of the NAACP, NEA, National Council of Negro Women and Women's Missionary Council of the CME Church.

In her personal life, Ms. Anderson was married to Emerson Hodge Jr. from 1966 to 1988. She was close with her family and friends, and acted as family historian and co-sponsor of every Thomas Clark family reunion from 1977-2007.

Scope and Contents

The Willie Burke Anderson Collection holds records relating to her career as an educator, her service to her community and church, and her personal life. The collection includes W.B. Anderson's diplomas and teaching credentials while also holding the many awards and recognitions she received for her impact as a teacher. As an active member in the alumni associations of her former high schools, Ms. Anderson collected alumni reunion packets which are featured in the collection.

A portion of the collection concerns her religious life. W.B. Anderson was an active member of the Cedar Crest Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Dallas and a member of the Women's Missionary Council of the C.M.E. Church. She kept historical records on the Cedar Crest C.M.E. Church and was active in directing plays and events for the church.

The collection shows the dedication Ms. Anderson had to remaining close with her friends and family. She acted as a family historian, collecting historical records on her families past and collected cards, memorial pamphlets, and letters from her friends and family.
