J.W. Barnett Collection
Biographical NoteJohn Walter Barnett was born in Dallas, TX on June 15, 1886. He attended public school in Waco, TX from 1893-1901. Mr. Barnett then attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1904-1908 and joined the Navy as an enginer in 1908. He resigned from the Navy in 1912 after commanding submarines for two years and went on to hold various shipping jobs as an engineer. From 1930-1935 he held high level positions with the U.S. Shipping Board overseeing the design and construction of steam and diesel vessels. From 1935-1939 Mr. Barnett served in the Naval Reserve. He was discharged in 1939 because the Navy considered his employer at the time, Babcock and Wilcox Company, essential to wartime industry. During the 1950's Mr. Barnett operated a cattle farm in Virgina. He left Virgina to return to Waco, TX on March 31, 1959. Mr. Barnett passed away in Waco on January 12, 1971 at the age of 84.
