Biographical Note

The History Club was organized in 1904 and began with eighteen members. In the beginning, the club met weekly in the mornings at ten o'clock. The course of study included current topics of interest in the field of Art, Music, Science, and Literature. The subjects of study changed from year to year. The purpose of the club was to be the intellectual development of its members. The club started to meet each Thursday afternoon at 2:30 beginning the first week in October and ending the last week in May at the home of the members. The yearly dues from each member were $1.00. In 1908-09, the membership of the club was limited to 25 members and 5 associate members. One of the activities of the club included assigning a book for each member to read, then giving a report on it. The club also carried out Community Service work. The club was active with art museums and purchased artwork by accredited Texas artists and presented it to art museums. The club made pilgrimages to a number of Art Galleries. Also, the club had tea parties and Christmas parties. During World War II, the club bought war bonds and donated blood plasma.
