Biographical NoteGeorge I Dorman was born in Dallas in 1897. He graduated from Allen Academy in Bryan, TX and later attended Texas A&M. George Dorman began his career as a manufacturing agent, working as an independent salesman for several companies, one of which was S. Ginsberg Sons, Baltimore, Maryland, makers of Calvert Clothes. Dorman served as the company's agent, handling its accounts throughout Texas. He was finally let go by the company on May 1, 1933 due to disagreements regarding how he was handling the accounts. Dorman later worked as a sales representative for Baltimore Business Forms, acting as their Southwest Manager based in Dallas. He passed away December 26, 1984. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe collection consists of the business papers of George I Dorman regarding his business dealings representing S. Ginsberg Sons Calvert Cloths menswear. The materials are of two basic types, correspondence and communication between Dorman and S. Ginsberg Sons Co. regarding business, and various business forms placed by Texas clothing shops with Dorman. The correspondence ranges from the mundane, verification of orders, to tense correspondence detailing certain shops' inability to pay and possible legal action. The George Dorman Manufacturing Agent papers are a good place to get a snap shot of business during the Great Depression in Texas, as Ginsberg/Dorman struggle to gain new business and get payment for their menswear. Researchers can also use the bills of sale and credit forms to trace the orders placed by various menswear shops in several cities throughout Texas. Return to the Table of Contents
