Scope and Contents

The community of Pleasant Grove has a long history of education. The name of its first school Pleasant Grove, was soon adopted by the community at large. Its growth over time necessitated the formation of a more formal school system. Tired of their children going to South Dallas in order to get a high school education, in 1937 both Pleasant Grove Independent School District and Pleasant Grove High were founded. The High School was officially named S.S. Connor, but came to be known as Pleasant Grove High. The 1950s saw the district's population double in five years, and the community of Pleasant Grove had been annexed into the City of Dallas. By 1953 voters in the district decided to abolish the Pleasant Grove Independent School District so that DISD could annex the area. By 1954 the area was annexed into the school district and by 1957 Pleasant Grove High School was replaced by W.W. Samuell High.

Pleasant Grove High School had an excellent sports tradition; their Bobcat teams regularly ranked among the top in the district. This collection was donated to the Pleasant Grove branch of the Dallas Public Library anonymously. Though the origins of this collection are unclear it could have been created by Roy Overturf, a star athlete and former president of the Pleasant Grove High Alumni Association. Much of the material pertains to Overturf's performance as an all-district center in basketball and all-district fullback in football. Materials in this collection include PGHS football and basketball clippings, photographs, a scrapbook and other items. Non sports memorabilia regarding PGHS include student snap shots, PGHS student booklets, and some PGHS Alumni materials.
