Biographical Note

The Lucas World War II Collection is a collection consisting primarily of correspondence between the Lucas family and sweethearts of Margaret Lucas. The family included husband Harvie and wife Margaret and the children Margaret and Harvie, Jr..

The siblings Margaret and Harvie, Jr. lived in Abilene and Dripping Springs, Texas in 1934. The daughter Margaret Lucas lived in Dallas, Texas in 1942-1943, and she lived in Utah in 1944-1945. H.O. Lucas, while stationed in California, wrote to his sister Margaret.

"Danny" Danner was stationed in Bonham, Texas and wrote to his sweetheart Margaret Lucas from 1942-1943. The letters convey the lifestyle of a military man during World War II and describe his workouts and training on aircraft. The letters also describe the heartfelt emotions between young sweethearts.

Harry Schaffler was stationed in Louisiana and Texas and wrote to Margaret in Utah from 1944-1945. He also describes some of his training at the base camp and his homesickness and longing to be with his sweetheart. He later moved to Camp Ritchie, Maryland and then Florida. The letters convey how Americans moved around the country while training for the military.

Margaret Lucas worked for the city of Dallas as the chief tax office cashier. She married Everett Roy Francis on March 9, 1948.
