Scope and Contents

On October 10, 1977, KERA-TV and the Corporation of Public Broadcasting agreed to the development of five one hour shows titled Centuries of Solitude, a look at the history of the Spanish speaking west. This historic drama intended to cover the history of the Hispanic west, focusing on three cities, Santa Fe, San Antonio and Los Angeles - and the time period between 1569 and 1930 and three cities, Santa Fe, San Antonio, and Los Angeles. The show never got past the development stage, and PBS funding never materialized further, leaving the show un-filmed.

The collection consists of the files of the project director, Mark Price, and deals with the attempted creation of a five hour historical drama, Centuries of Solitude. The papers consist of internal memos and correspondence within KERA and external correspondence with PBS. Also included are research, development, and show treatments created to give the television series the historical depth needed. Budgets, legal agreements and scripts show the various administrative aspects to the development of a television series. Despite the show never being filmed for broadcast, an interesting look into how a public broadcast television series is developed including the administrative, legal, and creative processes.
