Historical Background

The Old East Dallas Renaissance Coalition (OEDRC) is a result of the merger of two organizations, the Old East Dallas Coalition (OEDC) and the Old East Dallas Renaissance Project. The ODEC was formed in the early 1980s, as a coordinating organization for various neighborhood associations, businesses, churches and non-profits. Code enforcement and zoning were the primary focus of this coalition, working with City Hall, Code Enforcement, and the Dallas Police Department to improve the community. The Old East Dallas Renaissance Project (OEDRP) was formed in 1992 to support the Weed and Seed grant application made by the Dallas Police Department and City Hall. The weed and seed program is sponsored by the Department of Justice and promotes cooperation between police and community organizations. The OEDRP worked with the Dallas Police Department on several neighborhoods clean up projects, focusing on improving the environment as a way of battling crime. The two groups merged allowing for increased efficiency and to eliminate duplication of effort. By joining forces, the Old East Dallas Renaissance Coalition is able to speak from a more authoritative voice on behalf of the community of East Dallas.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of board and committee papers from the Old East Dallas Renaissance Coalition. Materials include the OEDRC's involvement in the Weed and Seed program run in conjunction with the Dallas Police Department, correspondence between board members and members of the East Dallas Community, administrative information including the paperwork leading up to the merger of the OEDC and the OEDRP. The collection includes minutes and newsletters detailing the activities of the OEDRC's board and a range of Committees focusing on a variety of topics such as business, economic development, and ministry. The papers of the OEDRC show a community organization in one of the oldest parts of Dallas working together and with city government to reduce crime and improve the quality of life within the community.
