Biographical Note

Mary K. Craig was born on November 17, 1842 in Jackson, Mississippi. She graduated Valedictorian of Wilcox Female College in 1859 and married Emmett Craig in 1867. They moved with their two small children to a farm near Paris, Texas in 1874, where she began to teach. Craig arrived in Dallas in the 1890s, organizing classes in 1894 at the home of Col. and Mrs. Robert Gaston. Mary moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, but returned to Dallas in 1900 to teach at the Dallas Academy.

Craig soon established a legendary reputation as a teacher leading a class that met at the Dallas Women's Club. This class soon became known as the Mary K Craig Class and still meets to this day. Mary passed away August 31, 1921 in Dallas.


Scope and Contents

The collection consists of letters sent back to her class from the Saint Louis World's Fair in 1904. There are 6 letters and a postscript.

Researchers are strongly encouraged to use transcripts of the letters in folder 2-8 of the collection or view the originals on microfilm located in Box 5 of the CTX Bio Clips. Due to preservation concerns, the original letters may only be viewed by consent of the archivist.
