Biography/Profile

The Baylor at Independence records contain materials from Baylor University's activities at Independence, Texas. These include the years Baylor University operated in Independence, organized in this collection as series one, and Baylor's more contemporary interest in Independence as the founding place of the university, organized in this collection as series two.

Baylor University, founded in 1845 under the Republic of Texas, is the oldest continuously operating university in the state. Led by early presidents Henry Lee Graves and Rufus Columbus Burleson, Baylor quickly developed a reputation as one of the top universities in Texas. The town of Independence was a religious and cultural center of Texas at the time of Baylor’s founding, and the students enjoyed rigorous academic classes while involved in a constant stream of social and religious activities.

For various reasons, President Burleson and most of the male campus faculty resigned to accept employment at the newly founded Waco University in Waco in 1861. The female campus continued to operate as Baylor University under the brilliant scholar President William Carey Crane. This branch of Baylor was granted its own charter as Baylor Female College in 1866, and was coeducational. With Crane’s death, trustees moved Baylor Female College to Belton in 1886. This school became the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, while Waco University in Waco became Baylor University.

Baylor University may have moved elsewhere from Independence, but the alumni never forgot their connection to Baylor and Independence. In 1978, Baylor University began an archeological exploration of part of the old Baylor campus at Independence. Under Jay Belew, this archeological work continued for a number of years, culminating in the establishment of Windmill Hill as a public park, operated by Baylor University. Much of series two contains records about Baylor's activities at Windmill Hill. Since then, Baylor University has helped operate the Independence Visitor Center and recently partnered with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to acquire and operate another part of Independence where Baylor University used to be. Baylor University continues to be involved in the Independence community today.

Scope and Content

The Baylor at Independence records were acquired in fourteen transactions. The initial gift was given by Mrs. H.W. Hughes in 1939 November. The second transaction, a gift from Annel Colbert, was given at an unknown time. The third gift, from E.W. Bailey, was also given at an unknown time. The fourth gift was given by the Texas State Historical Association via Bailey Carroll, 1953 June 24. The next two transfers were from uncatalogued holdings of The Texas Collection, both undated. A gift was added to the collection in 1939 January 9 by Mrs. J.S. Foster. The eight transaction was another transfer from uncatalogued holdings. The ninth transaction was a gift form O.R. Jordan, 1941 October 5. Four transfers from uncatalogued holdings follow this, all undated. The fourteenth transaction, also a transfer, came in 2012 December, also from The Texas Collection.

The collection begins in 1846 with correspondence and goes through 2012. The bulk of the collection is between 1883-2010. The Contemporary Baylor at Independence series is the largest in the collection. Within Contemporary Baylor at Independence, the largest subseries is on Windmill Hill.

Arrangement

The Baylor at Independence records - Historical Baylor at Independence series was loosely organized by type, with little indication of prior processing. This series was arranged by material type. Series two, Contemporary Baylor at Independence, was very well organized with folder titles and dates ranges already existing. Original order and existing folder titles were mostly kept intact. This series is arranged by topic, with material types noted in subseries, sub-subseries, and/or folder title. The records are arranged in two series: Historical Baylor at Independence and Contemporary Baylor at Independence.
