Biography/Profile

The Children’s Summer Institute was an enrichment program for children administered by Baylor University’s Armstrong Browning Library (ABL), a special collections library focusing on nineteenth-century (1800s) literature and culture. One-week sessions were held during the summer from 1989 through 1993 for children preparing to enter the sixth and seventh grades the following school year.

The program was inspired by the success of the ABL’s Pied Piper Tours of the library building, which had been offered for decades to local fifth-grade public and private school classes each spring. The Children’s Summer Institute, which was held at the ABL, introduced participants to outstanding children’s literature, encouraged creativity in writing and other forms of expression, and promoted the appreciation of poetry. Activities included individual and group writing, journaling, dressing as a favorite character, and creating art, music, and videos. In 1991 and 1992 a collection of students’ work, edited by the students, was created as a keepsake booklet; these are present in the collection.

The program was administered by Library staff who hired local teachers to plan and run the sessions. Guest speakers included a representative from the Central Texas Zoo (which preceded the Cameron Park Zoo), with animals, a puppeteer, and other local teachers who gave special presentations. This collection would be helpful to the study of summer camps for children dedicated to the fine arts, as well as the study of community outreach programs by libraries or museums in McLennan County, Texas, during the early 1990s.
