Sunrise Optimist Club Records
An Inventory to the Collection
This unit of the Optimist Club was founded in 1963 in Austin, Texas as the Capital Plaza Optimist Club and became the Sunrise Optimist Club in 1972. It was one of six North Austin (Zone 12) Optimist Clubs, each of which was self-sustaining and self-guiding under the Optimist International organization. The club was made up of men who volunteered their time to building a better community and developing the youth. Activities put on by the club include contests, youth baseball leagues, educational programs, and appreciation events.
The bulk of this collection consists of the records of the Pony, Colt, and All-Star youth baseball league teams run by the Sunrise Optimist Club between 1966 and 1977. Included are player statistics, rosters, photographs of teams, and award ceremony records. Also in the collection is a folder of organizational records of the Sunrise Optimist Club, mostly dated 1972-1973. Included are memos, pictures, and clippings regarding Ed O'Dell stepping down as youth baseball leader, 1973 member handbooks, baseball committee rules, meeting minutes, a speech about youth appreciation week, pamphlets, etc.
