Biographical Sketch

Anthony M. Orum was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 20, 1939. He received his BA at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in 1962, his MA at the University of Chicago in 1965, and his PhD in Sociology at the University of Chicago in 1967. His research interests include social movements, political participation, and urban politics.

Orum has taught courses in politics, urban history, immigration, and sociology at several universities including Emory University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of North Carolina. He taught at the University of Texas at Austin from 1972 to 1986. While in Austin he did research for a book that would be published in 1987 as Power, Money & the People: The Making of Modern Austin. Orum has authored and co-authored several other books including A Case for the Case Study, City-building in America, and many sociology textbooks on urban studies and politics.

He is a member of the American Sociological Association and the founding editor of City & Community, a journal of the Community and Urban Sociology Section of the ASA. He has received various recognitions and honors for his work, including teaching as a Fulbright Scholar in Shanghai, China.


Scope and Contents

The Power, Money & the People: The Making of Modern Austin Research Materials collection dates from 1981 to 1986 and contains the recordings from over 100 individuals that Orum interviewed for his book Power, Money & the People: The Making of Modern Austin. The topics of the interviews include city planning, civil rights, segregation, housing, and transportation. The interviews were originally recorded on cassette tape. This index contains a list of the interviews with their corresponding description and tape number. If a transcript exists for the recorded interview it is indicated in the inventory and the transcript is located in the Biography File of the person interviewed.
