An Inventory of the Collection
William Robert (Bob) King was born in San Benito, Texas in 1929, and grew up in Harlingen, Texas. He attended The University of Texas and graduated in 1951 with a bachelor of science in Architectural Engineering. He began his career in the early 1950s in Los Angeles, California as a structural designer for North American Aviation Corp. In 1954 King and his family returned to Austin, Texas where King re-enrolled in The University of Texas and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Architecture. He was a member of several architectural firms before forming his own firm, King Engineering Group, Inc. In addition, he served as a lecturer for the University of Texas School of Architecture.
The William Robert King Drawings contain thirty-six architectural projects that were completed between the years 1956 and 1997. The projects are all located in Austin, Texas with the exception of one residence in Leander, Texas and a project in Bastrop State Park. King served as the structural engineer for all but one of the projects, additions to an apartment building in 1956 by King and Eppes Architects. For the majority of the projects the architect was the Austin architectural firm of Barnes Landes Goodman and Youngblood. In addition, King worked with architects Raymond Yin, Coffee Crier & Schenck and Paul Lamb. A variety of building types are represented in the collection, including residential, commercial, ecclesiastical, educational, industrial and public. Projects include the Austin State School Chapel for the Children, Railroad Commission Building, Brackenridge Professional Building, Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Bastrop State Park Golf Course Clubhouse.
