Biographical Note

Larry Murphy was a professional photographer based in Austin, Texas active in the 1970s-1990s. Murphy worked for a number of years in the photography department of the Austin American-Statesman in the 1970s. He also worked for the University of Texas at Austin News and Information Service (unknown dates) with work appearing in such UT publications as the Texas Alcade. He also worked as a freelance photographer. No other information is known.

Scope and Contents

Approximately 100 black-and-white photographs and contact sheets, 3250 black-and-white and color negatives, and 200 color slides represent photographer Larry Murphy's work from the early 1970s to 1997, documenting people and scenes in Austin, Texas. About two-thirds of the collection consists of freelance work (Series I.) and the remainder consists of work shot for the Austin American-Statesman (Series II.). Some of the work in the freelance series may have been for the paper but was not identified as such. Murphy's freelance work consists of a mix of black-and-white and color negatives, slides, contact sheets and prints with a few text items mixed in, while his work for the Statesman is solely black-and-white negatives.

The collection covers a wide variety of subjects. A favorite subject is musician Emily Kaitz, with both candid scenes and posed shots for publicity. Candid and publicity photos are also present of the Austin Lounge Lizards. Various politicians are pictured including Governor Ann Richards, city council member Gus Garcia, and Texas Representative Sarah Weddington. Some events are documented such as a Hot Sauce Fest, assorted protests and demonstrations, speakers at UT, and various parades and celebrations. Scenes in Zilker Park and Barton Spring Pool are also a common topic. There are many scenes of everyday life including various "weather" shots (candid scenes around Austin). Some folders in the Freelance series include notes and ephemera such as liner notes for an Emily Kaitz audiocassette and a menu from Threadgill's.

Arrangement

The collection is organized in two series: I. Freelance/Personal Photographs and II. Austin American-Statesman Photographs. Files were organized chronologically within each series. Folder titles were taken from the photographer's notes; information in square brackets was added by the archivist for clarity.
