Administrative History

Founded in 1986 in Austin, Texas, Liatris Media, was a collective of women formed to promote, exhibit and distribute media works made by women, Third World artists, gay/lesbians and other "outsider" artists in order to educate, enlighten and inform the public of those perspectives. The collective was sponsored by Women and Their Work, a multidisciplinary arts organization whose purpose is to promote greater recognition of women's contributions to cultural life. The collective's original members were Linda Farin, Kitty Henderson, and Kathy Korniloff. Donna Shepard was added in 1988. The group founded the Animating Women: A Film Feast, The Women's Visions: An International Film Festival and the Third Wave International Women's Film and Video Festival. The Third Wave festival ran from 1986 through 1990. The festival was held at the Dobie in 1986 and, due to overwhelming success, was moved to the larger-capacity Varsity Theater in 1987. In 1988, it expanded to other cities including Houston, Dallas, Tulsa, Kansas City and Albuquerque. In 1990, Jane Henrici and Linda Farin left the Liatris "partnership" and handed over directorship to Jana Birchum with the request that any future funding for the project be under a different project name with the designation "formerly Liatris Media". Festival co-sponsors included the Austin Chronicle, Goethe Institute, UT Departments of Radio-Television-Film, Women's Studies, Speech, and Humanities, Austin Community College, TWA, Southwest Airlines, the Austin Arts Commission, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
