Administrative History

The Filming Austin's Lives collection contains short films that were created in 2005 and 2006 by community members in Austin, Texas as part of a contest. This film contest was sponsored by News 8 Austin, KLRU, the Austin History Center, and the University of Texas at Austin’s Humanities Institute. In 2005, filmmakers explored the question “Why do I call Austin and Central Texas home?” In 2006, they explored the theme “My Neighborhood.”

According to the Humanities Institute website, the "Filming Austin's Lives" film contest was inspired by the Institute's "Writing Austin's Lives" project which began in 2003. The goals of the contest were "to document Central Texas as seen by those who live here." The films were featured on the News 8 Austin website and on the contest's website.

News 8 Austin is a cable news channel in Austin, Texas and is owned by Time Warner Cable. In 2013 it changed its name to Time Warner Cable News. KLRU is a PBS member television station in Austin, Texas. The University of Texas at Austin's Humanities Institute is a center at the University that sponsors programs, forums, and projects associated with the humanities.

Scope and Contents

The Filming Austin’s Lives collection includes video entries (DVD, MiniDV, VHS tape), as well as entry forms, release forms, filmmaker biographies, and photographs that were submitted to the film contest in 2005 and 2006. It also includes a promotional poster for the 2005 contest.

The 2005 Filming Austin's Lives series contain administrative records and oral history recordings. The administrative records include a general collection of release forms, entry forms, and filmmaker biographies which are in the first folder in the box. Each of the subsequent folders contains the submission form, entry declaration form, permission/release form(s), and talent release form(s) if applicable for a particular film submission. These are arranged alphabetically by the filmmaker's last name. The oral history recordings contain the film submissions which include DVDs, MiniDV, or VHS tapes. These are arranged by the filmmaker's last name also.

The 2006 Filming Austin's Lives series contain administrative records and oral history recordings. The administrative records include all of the forms, filmmaker biographies, and photographs which are located in a single folder. The oral history recordings include the film submissions which are DVDs, MiniDV, or VHS tapes. These are also arranged alphabetically by the filmmaker's last name.
