Administrative History

The Heritage Society of Austin (HSA) is a non-profit organization established in 1953 with the mission of preserving buildings, markets, historical sites, works of art, documents, papers, pictures, records and writings of historical and cultural value. Renamed Preservation Austin in 2012, the organization bills itself as “Austin’s leading voice for the preservation of historic buildings and places.” As a result of their advocacy and financial support, at least 300 historic properties in Austin, Texas, including the Driskill Hotel, Paramount Theater, Governor’s Mansion, Laguna Gloria, and many private residences have been preserved.

As the organization has narrowed its focus to architectural preservation, the archival materials they originally collected have become part of the Austin-Travis County Collection (now the Austin History Center) at the Austin Public Library.

The affairs of HSA were managed by a Board of Directors. As Preservation Austin, the affairs continue to be managed by a Board of Directors along with a non-voting Advisory Board of Directors. The first president of HSA in 1953 was Mrs. Margaret Adams, painter and wife of artist Wayman Adams. Adams was succeeded in 1954 by Dr. Zachary T. Scott, Sr. The Heritage Society Board met once a year with occasional special “called” meetings. In 1963, HSA established the Heritage Guild as a way for members to participate in fundraising projects. The Heritage Guild had its own Board of Directors elected by Guild membership. The Heritage Guild Board met on a monthly basis. The president of the Heritage Guild was a member of the HSA Board of Directors and served as a liaison between the Guild and the greater HSA. Fundraising activities held by the Heritage Guild included bake sales and organized tours of historic Austin homes and neighborhoods. The Heritage Guild also operated the Old Lundberg Bakery, a lunchroom and tourist information center, from 1963-1970, and operated the 1886 Lunchroom and Socializing Parlor in the Driskill Hotel from 1971-1990. An Old Bakery Board existed under the direction of the Heritage Guild Board specifically to address affairs of the Old Bakery. The Heritage Guild disbanded in the early 1990s, but the 1886 Lunchroom and Socializing Parlor reopened in 2002 paying homage to the Heritage Guild who successfully ran it for two decades.

During its operation as HSA, the organization worked with local, state, and national policy makers and organizations such as the Austin Historic Landmark Commission, Texas Historical Commission, and Preservation Action to ensure that preservation was at the forefront of public policy agenda. HSA advocated for tax abatements for city landmark properties and a member of HSA board served on the City of Austin’s Historic Landmarks Commission. Members of Preservation Austin continue to serve on the Austin Historic Landmarks Commission. In 1971, HSA became a major stockholder in the Driskill Hotel Corporation to preserve the Driskill Hotel on 6th Street, a hotel built in 1886. Over $2.8 million in grants and loans were made to assist in preservation efforts. In 1978, HSA made $100,000 in matching grants available to owners of commercial properties for restoration, protection, preservation and beautification of historic building facades, many of which were on Congress Avenue and the surrounding downtown streets. In 1979, HSA purchased a demolition contract to save and move the Jacob Larmour House (built in 1875) and in 1975 funded removal of the utility lines enabling the Walter Tips House (built in 1876) to move from downtown Austin across Lady Bird Lake to its present site in south Austin. HSA also purchased historic properties and resold them to preservationists to enable the restoration of these properties. Examples include the Hirshfeld Mansion and Cottage (built in 1873), the Eugene Bremond House (built in 1873) and the Walter Tips Building (built in 1877). HSA also helped maintain the Flower Hill Museum (built in 1877) on West Sixth Street along with the original owner’s great-granddaughter, Jane Smoot.

The HSA was also involved in the running of the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm, more than 80 acres of land on Walnut Creek in northeast Austin. The land was donated to HSA in 1956. In 1974 HSA leased the land to the Austin Natural Science Association (ANSA) who worked with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department to build a 19th century farm and museum on the site. ANSA terminated its lease with HSA in 1996, but in 2003, when the Parks and Recreation Department ended its operation of the farm and cut significant funding, HSA again became involved by providing volunteers to help keep the farm running. In 2004 a Pioneer Farms Board of Governors was appointed by the HSA board to plan for the farm’s future. As of 2015, Pioneer Farms has hired staff and instituted financial systems to sustain itself without the support of Preservation Austin.

Events run by the Heritage Society of Austin have included historic tours of Austin homes and neighborhoods, awards presentations honoring the preservation work done on historic properties, and an antique show and sale/festival that was held from 1969-1978. The historic tours (variously called Spring Pilgrimage Tours, Austin Homes and Landmarks Tours, Historic Homes and Landmarks Tours, Walking Tours, Heritage Homes Tours, and Historic Homes Tours) started in the 1960s and continue to the present day. The awards presentation is an annual event held since 1960 that honors individuals, organizations, businesses and institutions that make an impact in the preservation of Austin’s heritage through restoring and rehabilitating structures, implementing sustainable technologies in preservation projects and shaping city policy regarding historic preservation. Originally called Silver Tea and Citation Awards Ceremony, then the Heritage Society Award Dinners, they are now called Preservation Merit Awards. The antique show and sale/festival event held from 1969-1978 raised money for HSA. Dealers displayed antiques for sale, members served refreshments and old-fashioned baked goods and there were demonstrations of spinning, weaving, needlepoint and quilting.

Heritage Society of Austin publications include: Old Bakery Bake Book (1971); Austin, The Past Still Present (1976); Historic Austin: A Collection of Walking/Driving Tours (1981); The Heritage Austin Cook Book (1982); 19th Century Austin (Booklet); A Workbook Tour of the Capital of Texas (1986); Historic Austin: An Illustrated History by author Mike Cox (1998).

Scope and Contents

Manuscripts, ephemera, photographs, slides, negatives, a scrapbook, a ledger and bound materials document the operations and activities of the Heritage Society of Austin from 1953 to 2003. The records are organized into six series: I. Administrative, II. Fundraising and Events, III. Project Files, IV. Marketing and Publicity, V. Subject Research Files, and VI. Highland Resources Hotel Intervention.

Series I, Administration, contains membership lists, meeting minutes, financial records, organizational lists, reports, correspondence, newspaper clippings, bylaws, renewal forms, ephemera and photographs generated by the governing bodies of HSA, dating from 1953-1995. It is divided into five sub-series.

The Membership sub-series contains lists of Life, Regular and Guild members of the HSA from 1965-1968 and forms for payment of membership renewal dues from 1976-1989. The Heritage Society Book, which is a bound volume with a list of member signatures and member photographs from 1975-1976, is included here. Files are arranged chronologically.

The Board Meetings sub-series includes records of The Heritage Society of Austin Board, Heritage Guild Board, Old Bakery Board and Heritage Alliance. Spanning 1953-1995, the records primarily consist of meeting minutes with financial records, organizational lists, officer reports, board correspondence, newspaper clippings and ephemera dispersed throughout. The HSA board minutes included are for their yearly and special “called” meetings. The bulk of the records are for the Heritage Guild Board, which met once a month. The Old Bakery Board operated under the direction of the Heritage Guild Board and the records include meeting minutes from 1963-1964. Records from the HSA's participation in Preservation Texas Alliance (1987-1992) and Heritage Alliance (1992-1995) are included here at the end of the sub-series. Notable topics in this sub-series include the Old Lundberg Bakery (1963-1970) and the “1886 Lunch Room and Socializing Parlor” in the Driskill Hotel (1971-1990). Files are arranged by board then chronologically within each board.

The Board Correspondence sub-series includes correspondence from the Heritage Society Board, 1955-1964, and the Heritage Guild Board, 1987-1988. General correspondence is dispersed throughout the collection with related subject material and with board meeting records. Files in this sub-series are arranged chronologically.

Financial Records consist of a ledger from 1985. Other financial records can be found scattered throughout the collection. Many are included within board meeting records and Antique Show and Festival records.

The General Records sub-series includes general administrative records from 1955-1994. The HSA acquired, through purchase or donation, historical items for use in the 1886 Lunchroom and Socializing Parlor, the Driskill Hotel, and other buildings. Inventory and appraisal records of these items with attached photographs from 1960-1993 are included here. Files are arranged alphabetically.

Series II, Fundraising and Events, contains financial records, correspondence, training materials, schedules, ephemera, flyers, newspaper clippings, member mailings, programs, scripts, invitations, pamphlets, brochures, maps, bulletins, handouts, announcement cards, reservation cards, newsletters, black-and-white and color photographs, color slides, black-and-white negatives related to the events held by the Heritage Society from 1961-1998. Major events documented in this series include the Antique Show and Festivals (1969-1978), Award Presentations (1961-1998), and Historic Tours (1962-1997), and each of these events has a sub-series.

The Antique Show and Festival sub-series contains material related to the 1968-1978 Antique Show and Festival held by HSA, at times referred to as the Antique Show and Sale. The original files are maintained and contain a mix of financial records, correspondence, schedules, ephemera, flyers, newspaper clippings, member mailings, programs, pamphlets, announcement cards, reservation cards, newsletters, and a few photographs. Files are arranged chronologically.

The sub-series on Award Presentations contains programs, scripts and invitations and some photographic prints, but the bulk of the materials consist of about 3,200 color slides of the winning properties from the 1976-1987 award dinners and presentations. Files in this sub-series are arranged first by format then chronologically.

The Historic Tours sub-series contains training material, brochures, flyers, ephemera, maps, financial records, bulletins and handouts document various historic tours offered by HSA from 1962-1998. Included in this sub-series are the following tours: Spring Pilgrimage Tours; Austin Homes and Landmark Tours; Historic Homes Tours; Heritage Homes Tours; Walking Tours. Tour materials are often identified by the tour location and not tour names listed. Most of the material is informational documents for public distribution. Also included are color photographs of the Smiths Home Tour. Files are arranged chronologically with undated material arranged alphabetically at the end of the sub-series.

Assorted Event Photographs consist of black-and-white and color prints, negatives, and slides. Photographs are primarily of people and buildings and were taken during annual meetings, award presentations, tours, and other society events. Included are images of Rita Clements, Mary Margaret Albright, Eleanor Drake, Betty Ross, Ellen Garwood, Peggy Brown, Katherine Drake Hart, and Pat Caroom as well as the 1886 Lunchroom and the Spaghetti Warehouse. Also included are photographs from a fundraiser held by HSA at the Driskill Hotel to raise money for the Friends of the Governor’s Mansion. Among the honored guests at this event were Governor and Mrs. Clements. Photographs are arranged alphabetically by subject and unidentified photographs are at the end of the sub-series. Additional event photographs can be found mixed in the project photographs in Series III, Project Files.

Series III, Project Files, documents the activities of the Heritage Society of Austin with manuscript and photographic materials.

General Project Files include newspaper clippings, booklets, correspondence, legislation, newspaper, reports, magazines, handwritten notes, newsletters, resolutions, menus, a genealogy of the Smoot Family, and an 1871 receipt from the Lundberg Bakery. Long-term projects like the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms, the Old Lundberg Bakery, the 1886 Lunchroom and Socializing Parlor in the Driskill Hotel, and the Flower Hill Museum are all represented in this series, as well as smaller projects. This series also includes documentation on organizations with which HSA worked, including the Texas Historical Commission, the Austin Historic Landmark Commission, and Preservation Action. This series also documents the Heritage Society‘s involvement with legislative issues and includes correspondence with Texas State legislators, recommendation reports, and draft legislation. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Project Photographs consist of black-and-white and color prints, slides, negatives, and a few lithographs related to the HSA’s projects and activities. Subjects include the Texas Governor’s Mansion, Driskill Hotel, Clapp House, Neill-Cochran House, East Sixth Street, and Congress Avenue. A binder titled “School Slide Show, Extra Slides Binder” contains images of art, sculptures, buildings, landmarks, and historic photographs. Some images are related to HSA projects and some are more generally related to Austin. Two additional slide binders contain images of buildings, events, published materials and fundraisers related to HSA projects. Events documented include “Uptown, Downtown,” “On with the Show” at the Paramount Theater, and the filming of Outlaw Blues at the Driskill Hotel. Most material is undated. An alphabetical list of individuals labeled as “Picture Index” was with the 2nd slide binder but the connection between the index and the slides is unclear. Files in this sub-series are arranged alphabetically by subject with unidentified photographs at the end, followed by the binders of assorted slides.

Series IV, Marketing and Publicity, includes copies of The 1886 Gazette and the Heritage Herald newsletters (1972-1980); newspaper clippings (1956-1970); general informational mailings and brochures (1955-1991); and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings of events and projects (1961-1965). Files are arranged alphabetically by format.

Series V, Subject and Research Files, contains the files HSA maintained on local and national preservation groups, historical locations, buildings and other topics dating from 1942-2000. Included are memos, correspondence, catalogs, pamphlets and brochures, newspaper clippings, articles, membership rosters, illustrations and a copy of Dallas’ Swiss Avenue Historic District Colouring Book by M. Wayland Brown, architect, 1975. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.

The final series, Series VI, Highland Resources Driskill Hotel Intervention, consists of legal documents and other materials related to the case Southern National Bank of Houston, Trustee, and Driskill Hotel Corporation vs. The City of Austin, Texas, The Heritage Society of Austin, Inc., and the State of Texas. Legal documents including transcripts of oral depositions and testimonies, briefs and replies are organized chronologically. Following the legal documents are files of assorted documents, largely arranged in original order. These include additional legal documents, notes, memoranda, correspondence, and research materials. The "buckets" in the folder titles refer to the original accordion-style folders that the materials were housed in.
