The "Exhibiting Austin" class examined the theoretical approaches and practical realities that shape collecting, preserving and exhibiting Austin's local history. The records include the final projects of the Spring 2014 class taught by Professor Cary Cordova.

Administrative History

The University of Texas at Austin Department of American Studies focuses on the cultural, social, and intellectual life of the United States, as well as the place of the United States and US citizens in the world. The "Exhibiting Austin" class examined the theoretical approaches and practical realities that shape collecting, preserving and exhibiting Austin's local history. Professor Cary Cordova asked students to analyze and interpret local history and to connect educational experiences in the classroom with real-world applications in the local community. The students chose projects that would be supportive the mission of the Austin History Center. Students presented their final projects at an event at the Austin History Center on May 13, 2014.


Scope and Contents

The records include all the materials related to the final projects submitted by each student and include economic studies, a fundraising project, a resource guide, oral history interviews, photo essays and reports. The research topics were varied, but featured examinations in education, the arts, activism, food, transportation, and human trafficking, and include contributions to Mexican American history, Asian American history, Native American history, Czech history and LGBTQ history.
