Biographical Note

Andrew Long is a visual artist, photographer, choreographer, educator, dancer, and a prominent figure in Austin, Texas’s artistic, dance, and theatre communities.

Long was born on September 1, 1964 in Suffern, New York to the photographer Joseph Long and the abstract painter Mildred Confietto. Long grew up in Nyack, New York. He attended Pearl River High School in Pearl River, New York, where he was the photography editor of the school yearbook. In 1982, after graduating from high school at 16, Long attended Ramapo College of New Jersey for one year, where he was the photography editor of the weekly campus newspaper. He later moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1986.

After moving to Austin, Long worked as a freelance photographer from 1984-1992. Long mostly photographed musicians and performers in Austin, sometimes during live performances but primarily for promotional materials and album covers through his contracts with record labels. He was a contributor to many publications including Guitar World Magazine, Guitar Player Magazine, DownBeat Magazine, Spin Magazine, and the Austin Chronicle, where he held the title of Special Projects Photographer.

In 1990, Long took an improvisational dance class with the choreographer Darla Johnson at the Women’s Federation Building in Austin. The two went on to found the Johnson/Long Dance Company (now known as Creative Arts Austin). Long served as Artistic and Executive Director of the company from 1990-2005. In his position as Artistic Director, Long worked as a conceptual artist, choreographer, and performer. He also photographed productions for the company’s promotional materials and publicity.

From 1988-2002, Long taught photography at the Dougherty Arts Center as well as at Concordia University, both in Austin. He has been a visiting dance/theatre artist at the University of Texas, Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, McLennan Community College in Waco, Winona State University in Minnesota, and the O. Henry Museum in Austin, as well as Adjunct Faculty at Austin Community College. He has published both art and theatre criticism and poetry.

As of 2015, Long works as an abstract painter in Austin. He regularly exhibits his paintings in galleries throughout the Southwest, including Dougherty Arts Center (Austin), Plus Gallery (Denver), McMurtrey Gallery (Houston), and Conduit Gallery (Dallas).

Scope and Contents

Photographs, negatives, press clippings, and correspondence document the artist Andrew Long’s photography career between the years 1984 and 2000. The collection includes Long’s photo assignments for local weekly newspaper the Austin Chronicle and as a freelancer for other music-related magazines such as Guitar Player, Guitar World, and Spin as well as for various record labels.

The photographic materials include negatives, slides and transparencies, contact sheets, and a smaller number of prints, ranging in size from 4x4" to 11x14". The negatives and transparencies are an almost even mix of 35mm and 120 film, with more black-and-white than color film present. Subjects in the photographs are almost entirely musicians, bands, and figures in the Austin music industry, including Mike Buck, Lou Ann Barton, Joe "King" Carrasco, the Butthole Surfers, Dan del Santo, Louis Meyers, Margaret Moser, Evan Johns, the LeRoi Brothers, the Texas Tornadoes, and the True Believers. The photographs are primarily posed portraits, though some photographs document performances. Beyond musicians, there are other artists and locals represented, such as sculptor Stephen Daly, painter Richard Jordan, and screenwriter Bud Shrake.

Along with the photographic materials are a number of clippings from newspapers and magazines as well as some CD and record album covers, all of which show Long’s photographs in their published form. Some folders also contain notes and correspondence between Long and clients. At the end of the series is a folder of prints, negatives and contact sheets from unidentified projects, possibly including work by other photographers.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in one series, Photography Projects. This is arranged alphabetically by subject (mostly musicians).
This collection arrived at the Austin History Center in original order. Minimal arrangement was imposed on the collection. Original content of folders are intact, but the folders have been alphabetized. Many folder titles are original, though dates were added, abbreviations were spelled out, and unlabeled folders were given titles according to their contents.
