Biographical Note

Millo Marcum worked in the Parachute Department at Randolph Air Field during World War II. In 1942 she was appointed as a "Victory Volunteer" to open the new bond drive for civilian employees at the air base to sell war bonds. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Neal who lived at 5001 Rowena Street in Austin, Texas. She was married to Elton Marcum who served in the U.S. Navy. The Marcums lived at 812 Park Boulevard and were members of Hyde Park Baptist Church.

Scope and Contents

An album with 43 black and white photographs documents Millo Marcum's time as a parachute packer at Randolph Air Field (now Randolph Air Force Base) in San Antonio, Texas from 1942-1943. The cover of the album is decorated with military planes and is titled "Del Valle Army Air Base, Austin, Texas" although it does not appear that any of the photos are of that base. Photographs depict Marcum and colleagues, especially Maxine Robinson, packing, cleaning, and checking parachutes, and receiving Victory Volunteer pins; other Air Base personnel and airmen; military planes; a dance; Red Skelton; views of a 1943 flood in St. Louis, Missouri; flight demonstrations at dedication of Alliance Army Air Base in Nebraska on August 23, 1943; a 'base operations' building; other candid scenes. A few clippings in the album highlight Marcum and and Maxine Robinson and their work for the parachute department.

For preservation purposes the photographs were removed from the original album pages and sleeved in Mylar sleeves; captions from the pages were copied onto the backs of the photos.

The photographs were numbered in the order they appeared in the album. Loose clippings were placed at the back of the album.
