Biographical Note

Charles Joseph Schneider was born in 1884, the second child of Jacob Peter Schneider and Mary Kirschrink. In 1915 he married Edna Lois Estes (born 1892). They had one son, Charles Joseph Schneider, Jr., who was born in 1915. Charles Schneider, Sr. was a life-long Austin resident. He attended St. Edward's University. For most of his career he was manager at Swift & Co. meat packers and later he was one of the owners of Capital City Provision Company. He was active in many organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, Elks, Old Austin Rifles, and the Chamber of Commerce. He served as president of the Holy Name Society. Lois Schneider was president of the St. Mary's Alumnae Association of Austin and was governor of the Texas Chapter, International Federation of Catholic Alumnae. Charles, Jr. studied at the University of Texas, then worked at the State Highway Department. He later married Mabel Irene Nabors. Charles, Sr. died in 1942, Lois died in 1954, and Charles, Jr. died in 1986.


Scope and Contents

Printed materials and 31 photographs document the life and family of Charles J. Schneider, Sr. Printed materials include a wedding invitation for Charles Schneider and Lois Estes and a clipping about their wedding; a photographic greeting card with a picture of their house at 608 Ruiz Street in Austin; a 1926 roster for Austin Rotary Club; a program booklet for the 25th anniversary celebration of the Austin Knights of Columbus; a business card for Capital City Provision Company. Photographs include portraits and snapshots of Charles Schneider, Sr., Lois Estes Schneider, and Charles Schneider, Jr.; interior views of unidentified stores; landscape views from around the Austin area including the Colorado River.

Printed materials were placed at the beginning of the collection, followed by photographs which were arranged by subject.
