Biographical Note

Daisy Barrett Tanner was historian for St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas. She spent years researching the history of the church and gave slide presentations about it. Articles from the Austin American-Statesman in 1958 indicate that she gave public lectures illustrated with slides that year. These lectures, sponsored by St. Cecelia's Guild, were based on previous presentations she had given to the Heritage Society.

Tanner was known for her participation in the arts. In the 1950s she wrote art reviews for the Austin American-Statesman and served on the board of directors for the Texas Fine Arts Association. Previously she had lived in Boston and lectured at the Museum of Fine Arts. In the 1960s she lived in Brussels, Belgium where her husband was political attache. While there she was a hostess for the Embassy and served on the board of directors for a private school.

Scope and Contents

55 lantern slides depict the development of St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, its pastors and congregants, and the surrounding downtown area. The slides were made in the 1950s, but many reproduced earlier images (including some drawings) dating back to the 1840s. Some images are duplicates of other images at the Austin History Center. The slides are presumably what Daisy Barrett Tanner used for her public lectures about the history of the church in 1958, though it is unknown if this is a complete set of her presentation slides. Subjects include portraits, including pastors of the church, Episcopal Bishops, and congregants actively involved in the history of the church; views of the church, including the original building, various additions, exterior views and interior views; views of Austin, primarily downtown and immediately surrounding the church; and assorted subjects. Most images are black and white but one is in color.

Arrangement

The original order of the slides was unknown, so staff organized them into these groups: portraits (alphabetical, followed by group portraits), views of the church, views of Austin, and assorted subjects.
