Biographical Note

Lawrence Kelley Smoot (1875-1968) was a librarian and hobbyist photographer. He was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky to Richmond Kelley Smoot (1836-1905), a Presbyterian minister. The family moved to Austin, Texas in 1877. Lawrence graduated from law school at the University of Texas at Austin and became State Law Librarian. Later he was an editorial reporter for the Texas Supreme Court. He had a daughter, Jane, who was born in 1919.


Scope and Contents

23 photographs, printed from glass plate negatives taken by Lawrence K. Smoot, document people and scenes in Texas. Subjects include Lawrence Graham on his 75th birthday; reproductions of maps from the General Land Office; fossils; scenes of the Colorado River, the lake below Campa Pajama, and the Llano River in Kingsland, Texas; Saddle Mountain and Devil's River; and a ranch in Hays County.


Arrangement

Photographs were arranged and numbered in the order they were received. Due to previous collection processing policies, photographs related to Austin and Travis County were removed from the collection and distributed among the Austin Files; see separated materials.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

In 1974 Jane Smoot, daughter of the photographer, loaned the glass plate negatives to the AHC for the purpose of making photographic prints for the AHC collection. She later donated the original glass plates to the Barker Texas History Center (now the Briscoe Center for American History).
