Biographical Note

A native Texan currently living in Austin, Ave Bonar is known both locally and nationally for her photography. Born in Lubbock, Texas, she lived in Galveston the first nine years of her life before returning to Lubbock, where she attended High School. In 1968, after completing three years at Texas Tech University, she moved to Austin, Texas and enrolled at the University of Texas where she studied ceramics and jewelry for one year before dropping out. Later that same year she married Jim Bonar, an artist, and moved with him to Davis, California, where he was attending art school. It was in California that she first got interested in photography, learning the technical and artistic aspects from Jim and later finding work as a photographer. She returned to Austin and completed a degree in photojournalism at the University of Texas.

During and after university, she worked as a freelance photographer in Austin and, in 1984, was commissioned by the Texas Historical Foundation as one of 15 photographers to document different regions in Texas. Bonar chose the Lower Rio Grande Valley and later showed the full 85 prints she made as a one-woman show in Austin. In 1985 she was commissioned by the City of Austin, along with six other photographers, to document one of Austin's many neighborhoods. She chose the Bouldin Creek neighborhood, where she was living at the time. In addition to these and other commissions, she did regular documentary work for the Laguna Gloria Art Museum and created the monthly "Face Page" for Austin's Third Coast magazine.

Bonar became more widely known as an artist after publishing a series of her photographs as post cards and gained even more national attention in 1990 when she photographed Ann Richard's successful campaign for governor and subsequently published With Ann: a Journey Across Texas with a Candidate for Governor. Ave Bonar continues work as a freelance photographer in Austin, Texas.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains 334 pages of photographic negatives with contact sheets (primarily black and white), along with 49 black and white 8x10" prints ranging from September 1976 to November 1990. The daily life of Austin and its residents are depicted in photos of museums, shopping malls, restaurants, special events, songwriter's competitions, and recreational activities. There are also 35 contact sheets (without corresponding negatives) from the 1985 Bouldin Creek Neighborhood project, commissioned by the City of Austin. These have Bonar's notes and contact information from the project written on the backs.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged largely as it was received. In Series I negatives are paired with their corresponding contact sheets and are arranged chronologically. 8x10" prints from some of these negatives are in the folders with their corresponding contact sheets. Folder titles were taken from Bonar's descriptions. Series II consists of assorted 8x10" prints without negatives or contact sheets and are arranged in alphabetical order. Series III consists of the Bouldin Creek Neighborhood project contact sheets.
