Administrative History

Boards and commissions are an established feature of Austin's (Texas) municipal government. State, federal and Charter provisions establish several of the City's boards and commissions, while most result from the passage of ordinances. Boards and commissions address a multitude of topics including planning, zoning, transportation, parks, libraries and the airport. Their influence and value are significant because they lend a more diverse viewpoint for the City Council to consider, by offering citizens an opportunity to participate in the City's governmental process. A full list of the current City of Austin boards and commissions is available on the City of Austin website.

The City of Austin Environmental Board (originally called the Citizens Board of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality) was created by the Austin City Council in 1971 (Ordinance No. 711246-A) to serve as an advisory body to the City Council, the City Manager, and the office of Environmental Resource Management concerning all projects and programs affecting quality of life including land use planning and environmental resource integrity. Currently the Board operates under Ordinance 921203-B and acts in an advisory capacity on all projects and program which affect the quality of life for the citizens of Austin and makes recommendations for standards and recommends and initiates specific studies. Examples of the Boards' work include floodplain management, land development code review, wastewater treatment plant improvements, oversight of the Watershed Protection Master Plan, review and analysis of Barton Creek Watershed plan, water and air quality protection, protection of species and habitats of concern, monitor progress of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and Barton Springs Pool Master plan.
