An Inventory of the Collection
Boards and commissions are an established feature of Austin's municipal government. State, federal, and charter provisions establish several of the city's boards and commissions, but most result from the passage of ordinances. Boards and commissions address a multitude of topics, including planning, zoning, transportation, parks, libraries, and the airport. The influence and value of boards and commissions is significant because, by offering citizens an opportunity to participate in the city's governmental process, they lend a more diverse viewpoint for the city council to consider. In 1986, the Austin City Council, pursuant to resolution 860417-8, established the Architectural Excellence Commission, the goal of which was to "recognize and encourage quality architecture." The commission's membership was to be "three registered architects licensed to do business in the State of Texas" and "four citizens at large having interest in architectural excellence." In 1987, the city council, pursuant to resolution 870917-27, changed the name of the commission to the City of Austin Design Commission and established the terms of office (two years) for its commissioners and the maximum number of terms that the commissioners could serve (three terms). Currently, the duties of the Design Commission, pursuant to city ordinance no. 2-1-129, include "provid[ing] advisory recommendations to the city council as requested by the council to assist in developing public policy and … promot[ing] excellence in the design and development of the urban environment."

The collection is comprised of one series, Administrative Records (2000-2009), which contains annual reports and work plans. Included with the 2007-2008 annual report and 2008-2009 work plan are agendas and meeting minutes.
