Administrative History

In 1937, the United States Congress passed the federal Housing Act. On December 23, 1937, then-Congressman Lyndon Baines Johnson, one of the principal authors of the act, addressed the Austin City Council regarding the law. At that same meeting, the Austin City Council authorized the Housing Authority via a resolution stating that such an authority was needed to deal with "insanitary and unsafe inhabited dwelling accommodations" and "a shortage of safe and sanitary dwelling accommodations in the City of Austin, Texas, available to families of low income at rentals they can afford." In 1939, residents moved into Santa Rita Courts, the first public-housing project approved by the Authority. By 1940, residents had moved into Rosewood Courts and Chalmers Court, the other two of the three original developments.

The Housing Authority currently has nineteen public-housing developments that encompass 1,929 units and twenty-two single-family homes. It also administers the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which subsidizes housing for more than five thousand low-income individuals and families.
