Administrative History

University Junior High School was the result of an effort to create a secondary school jointly between the University of Texas and the Austin Public Schools (later the Austin Independent School District). First brought to discussion in 1932 the proposed school would be a tool of the University's Education Department available for its staff to observe, demonstrate and explore educational theories. It would also provide Austin Public School's with the much needed space the growing secondary enrollment had created a need for. The agreement that was reached stipulated that the University of Texas would provide the site and building at a cost between $300,000 and $400,000 as well as furnishings, while the Austin Public Schools selected and paid the regular teaching staff and half the salary of the principal. The school opened in September 1933 and had an enrollment of 831 its first year and included grades six through eight. The school closed in June of 1967.

Scope and Contents

The University Junior Highs School Records, 1932-1967, consist of organizational records, financial documents, meeting minutes, photographs, and scrapbooks documenting the history of the school, the parent-teacher association, and the publication of a book committed to the recollections of the school entitled "Golden Memories". The material is arranged into four series, the first I. Organizational Records (1932-1964), includes governing documents, financial materials, meeting minutes, rosters, programs, honors and awards, floor plans, and printed materials. The printed material is comprised of examples from the school's civil defense plans. Series II. Golden Memories Material (1932-1967), is made up of manuscripts and photographs used in the publication of the book "Golden Memories" and includes material composed by former administration of University Junior High School as well as student artwork used in the book and staff rosters. The third series, III. Parent-Teacher Association Records (1933-1966), includes organization records, financial records, correspondence, committee meeting agendas and minutes. There is also a dismantled scrapbook of parent-teacher association clippings, financial statements, notes, and history summaries. The final series, IV.
