Abstract: J. Eugene Wukasch, born in Austin, Texas in 1921, graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in architecture (B.S.Ar.E) in 1943. After working with several architectural firms he established his own practice 1953 which would eventually become Wukasch & Associates, AIA, PE, Architect and Consultants. The collection contains extensive project files and architectural drawings for Austin/Travis County projects as well as a limited amount of office files and materials related to Wukasch's involvement with several Austin/Travis County civic organizations dating from 1926 to 1995.

Administrative History

J. Eugene Wukasch (1921-2001) was born on July 12, 1921, in Austin, Texas. In 1943, he earned his B.S.Ar.E. from the University of Texas at Austin. Wukasch worked as a structural engineer for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in California prior to his service in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. After being honorably discharged he worked for Wyatt C. Hendrick, Architect and Preston M. Green, Architect in Fort Worth as a draftsman. In the late 1940s he moved to Houston, Texas and worked for Mosher Steel Company and Staub & Rather, Architects. After moving back to Austin he worked for two years for Jessen, Jessen, Millhouse & Greeven, AIA. In 1954, he established practice as Eugene Wukasch, Architects & Engineer (the name was later changed to Wukasch & Associates, AIA, PE, Architect and Consultants). During the 1970s he had brief partnerships with William A. Moellendorf and Girard Kinney.

For almost twelve years, the firm specialized in design services for residences and religious structures, and it gained wide acclaim for its innovative solutions to the wide variety of residential and ecclesiastical architectural projects with which it was confronted. During the early 1960s, the firm began to enlarge and to expand its expertise. By 1970, it was no longer a small organization, and its project list had grown to include public buildings, military projects, medical-care and retirement facilities, schools, and a variety of special services. During the 1970s, the project list expanded to include restorations, parks and park structures, retail stores in shopping centers, and housing projects, and the firm also offered services for interior design, landscaping, graphic arts, architectural graphics, electrical and lighting engineering, structural and electrical trouble shooting, and project master planning.

Scope and Contents

The Wukasch & Associates Records and Drawings collection contains extensive project files and architectural drawings for Austin/Travis County projects as well as a limited amount of office files and materials related to Wukasch's involvement with several Austin/Travis County civic organizations dating from 1926 to 1995.

The Project Files series (1932-1992) represents the majority of the textual files in the collection. Included in the project files are pre and post-letting materials; incoming and outgoing correspondence; telephone record and memorandum for file (there could be up to 10 of these for each day depending upon the stage of the project and were sampled to include 4-10 per month); bid requests and responses (responses are sampled); project specifications; subsurface investigation and foundation recommendation reports; engineering notes; contracts; finish and color schedules; punch lists; time extension requests; construction progress reports; field inspection reports (these were conducted daily or weekly depending upon the stage of the project and were sampled to include 2 to 3 for each month); monthly certificates of payments and certificates of payment upon project completion; construction photographs; and shop drawings (folded). In addition to the standard project file materials for the Westminster Manor project there are legal documents concerning a lawsuit filed by Westminster Manor against the George A. Fuller Company, the construction company hired to build the project.

The Architectural Drawings series (1926-1987) includes 210 sets of drawings for a total of approximately 2500 drawings, the majority of which correspond with the project files from the previous series. Included are preliminary drawings or sketches, plans (architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing), elevations, sections, interior/exterior details, working drawings, site plans, presentation drawings and perspectives. In addition to drawings by Wukasch several other architects' work are represented in the collection including Carl H. Stautz, Henry Steinbomer and Page Southerland Page. These drawings are included because Wukasch was either a consulting architect for the project or was renovating the original work of the architect.

Some of the well-known or larger projects represented in the collection (Austin/Travis County) include: Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (1955); Creedmoor School (1955); Texas Lutheran Welfare Society and State Offices of the National Lutheran Council (1956); Texas Public Employees Association State Headquarters building (1961); Concordia College Master Plan and renovations (various buildings; 1960s); Gethsemane Lutheran Church (1963); City of Austin Fire Station #18 - Berkman Drive (1964); Westminster Manor (1965); various projects at Bergstom Air Force Base (1960s-1980s); Carrington-Covert House restoration (1972); Menchaca Elementary School (1973); Brackenridge Urban Renewal Project - Waller Creek (Waterloo) Park (1977); Brackenridge Urban Renewal Project - Symphony Square (1970s); Daniel H. Caswell House restoration (1978); Austin Community College - Rio Grande Campus (remodel of Austin High School; 1978); and the Morley Building (Grove Drug) restoration (1986). In addition to the projects included in this collection, Wukasch designed churches, commercial, government, retail and educational buildings throughout the state of Texas. Theses project files and architectural drawings can be found at the University of Texas Alexander Architectural Archives in the J. Eugene Wukasch Records.

The Office Files series (1942-1988) contains a small amount of materials related to conferences, presentations and articles given or written by Wukasch; marketing; personal and company histories and publicity and awards received by the firm or Wukasch. The bulk of the publicity materials concern the Symphony Square and Gethsemane Lutheran Church projects.

And lastly, the Civic Involvement series (1905-1995) is composed of meeting minutes, flyers, programs, newspaper clippings, correspondence and reports for historic preservation and neighborhood organizations Wukasch was involved with or he found interesting. The most significant amount of materials in this series document Wukasch's longtime commitment to the Travis County Historical Commission (originally known as the Historical Survey Committee).
