Administrative History

The Calhoun Debating Society was founded in 1901 as a social club at Austin High School (Texas) that promoted the exercise of parliamentary procedure, the study of debate and the practice of other forms of public speaking. The club was disbanded in 1949 following an effort by the Austin Public Schools Board of Trustees (School Board) and the Texas Legislature to ban fraternities and sororities in high schools.

Scope and Contents

The Calhoun Debating Society scrapbook documents the activities of the organization from 1937 to 1949. The scrapbook contains membership lists, newspaper clippings, photographs, and event invitations. Included are newspaper articles about the controversy surrounding the debating and literary societies at Austin High School that are not open to any student who wished to join, as well as a copy of House Bill 632 passed in 1937 by the Forty-fifth Legislature (but not signed into law by Governor Jester until 1949) that prohibited fraternities, sororities and secret societies in all public school in Texas.
