Abstract: The John T. Allan Junior High School building (originally Austin High School), located at the corner of 9th Street and Trinity Street, was built in 1900. The building was renamed John T. Allan Junior High School in 1925 and destroyed by fire in 1956. The collection contains the Constitution and meeting minutes of the Allen High School Parent Teacher Association, Jefferson Debating Society records, and the building cornerstone contents that includes an Austin High School student list 1899-1900, extracts from School Board meeting minutes about building a new school, and other school bond related materials.

Administrative History

The John T. Allan Junior High School building (9th Street and Trinity Street) was built in 1900 and originally housed Austin High School. In 1925, because of overcrowding at Austin High School, the High School moved to an existing junior high school campus and Austin High School building was renamed John T. Allan Junior High School. The building was destroyed by fire in 1956 and the building's cornerstone contents were donated to the Austin History Center.

Acquisition Information

The Allan Junior High School building cornerstone contents was donated to the Austin History Center (Austin-Travis County Collection) by the School Board after the building burned in 1956. In 1964 James H. Hart donated the Jeffersonian Debating Club record book that he received from Ada Blackburn, the sponsor of the Club. The Allan Junior High Parent-Teacher meeting minutes were donated by Donna Price (DO/1979/025) in 1979.
