Administrative History

The Altrusa Club of Austin, a service organization for executive and professional women began meeting in 1922 and received its official charter from the national organization on April 23, 1923. The 26 charter members held occupations ranging from custodian to attorney. The club's active recruitment and classification processes allow them to maintain a diverse representation of business and professional women within a relatively constant membership of 50 to 60 members. Through their meetings and community involvement, the club provides members the opportunity to exchange ideas, broaden their individual outlooks, and affect a positive influence on their community. Since 1932, the Altrusa Club of Austin has published a monthly newsletter, Gleanings. In service to their community, the club has raised funds for orphans, the Travis County Juvenile Home, and war-time efforts, and has volunteered for the Red Cross, Recordings for the Blind, and Adopt-a-Highway. Annually, the Altrusans offer a "Girl of the Year" award to a high school junior and provide scholarship funds to university women. Social events of the club include costume parties, formal banquets, and fund raising events. Also involved in state, national and international levels of the International Association of Altrusa Clubs, Inc., the Austin chapter has hosted state and national conferences, assisted in the establishment of Altrusa Clubs around Texas, and sponsored scholarships for Altrusans from foreign countries to study in the United States.

Scope and Contents

Arranged into ten series, the minutes, proceedings, correspondence, applications, financial documents, photographic materials, scrapbooks, artifacts, scholarship documents, and printed material document the organizational structure and extensive civic activities of the Altrusa Club of Austin, Texas, 1922-2000. The General series (1923-1991) contains historical information as well as organizational documents. The largest series, Annual Accumulations (1922-2000), extensively documents the formal procedures of the club. Arranged chronologically, the bound accumulations (1922-1976/77, 1986/87-1990/91) are filed as they were received. The annual accumulations of the remaining years' (1977/78-1985/86, 1992/93-1999/00) have been arranged to duplicate the order established by the earlier records of the club. The yearbooks contained in the annual accumulations effectively summarize each year's membership, social, and philanthropic activities. The club's membership is especially well documented through applications, correspondence, rosters, and member cards contained in the Membership series (1922-1997). The Printed Materials series consists of examples of the variety of awards and certificates presented to club members as well as transcripts from the broadcasts of the programs "Vocations for Women". Letters both sent and received make up the Correspondence series (1926, 1970-1985, 1989-1991, 1995-2000). As a part of a national organization members of Altrusa in Austin were invited to attend the annual conference and hosted their own district conference as well. Programs, advertisement, correspondence, names tags, and other related material from these annual meetings make up the Conferences series (1927, 1965, 1979, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000). In the Scrapbooks and Photo Album series (1936-1967) can be found scrapbooks organized by Altrusa members to commemorate its many members and events. More visual evidence of the club's members, events, and outings can be found in the Photographic Materials series (1950's-1980's) which includes black and white and color photographs, slides, and negatives. The Scholarship series (1985, 1988-1992, 1996-1997) contains applications composed by students in hopes of being awarded the Altrusa scholarship, as well as correspondence, and documentation of the awarding of the scholarships.

Arrangement

As received, the records contained bound annual accumulations for the years 1922-1976/77, based on a July 1-June 31 fiscal year. Each binder was labeled with the particular year and the president's name for that year. For the years 1986/87-1990/91, the same general types of materials were also received bound and labeled with the particular year and the title "Recording Secretary's Notebook". The integrity of these bound volumes was maintained as received. For the remaining years, 1977/78-1985/86 and 1993/94-1999/00 the same types of materials were received more loosely filed in manila folders labeled with rough year designations.
These files contained types of materials such as correspondence and membership applications which were moved to their respective series. For these years, a structure was created to emulate the order of the bound accumulations. These accumulations are labeled "assorted" and are filed within the chronological series annual accumulations. The records also contained many duplicates of forms and applications, which were discarded. The state, national, international materials were discarded on the premise that these materials were outside the scope of the archives and were more completely preserved elsewhere.
