CharLeu W. Diercks Papers
An Inventory of the Collection
CharLeu "Char" Diercks was an exhibit designer at the Austin Natural Science Center in the early 1970s when it was located at 401 Deep Eddy Avenue. She was a founding member and the first recording secretary of the Austin Natural Science Association Guild which formed in 1968. The guild disbanded in 2000. After leaving the Science Center in 1976, Diercks worked as a registrar at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library and Museum until 2008.
A disbound scrapbook, notes, and booklets document the work of CharLeu Diercks as exhibit designer at the Austin Natural Science Center in the early 1970s. The scrapbook contains 34 color photographs which depict the exhibits she created for the science center using papier mâché, drawings and diagrams, found objects, specimens, and models. Upon her resignation from the Center in 1976, Diercks had Luke Thompson photograph the exhibits that she had designed. She mounted the photographs with captions into a scrapbook to help remember the work she had done for the Center. In 2013 Diercks added some notes to the scrapbook and drew a diagram of the layout of the Science Center as it was in the early 1970s at 401 Deep Eddy Avenue, locating where the photographed exhibit items were within the building; this map is in the folder with the scrapbook pages. Diercks also made brief notes about some of the people associated with the Center at that time, which are in the same folder. At the back of the scrapbook are 5 cards and postcards which reproduce drawings by Diercks of other historical sites in Austin, including Pioneer Farms, the Elisabet Ney Museum, and the O. Henry Museum.
The collection also includes a membership booklet for the Austin Natural Science Association Guild for 1976-1977, the cover of which was drawn by Diercks, and an Austin-area bird guide book with drawings and diagrams by Diercks.
