Biographical Note

Greg Sells was born in 1963 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He took up photography as a child using an old camera of his parents, and later upgraded to an SLR with money from a summer job held during his high school years. His photography skills were primarily self-taught. He took journalism classes at Flour Bluff High School in Corpus Christi where he learned darkroom skills and fine-tuned his photography technique. In 1981 he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin where he majored in history, but he also took a history of photography class with Roy Flukinger. He has lived in Austin since then.

While living in Austin, Sells has developed a passion for the Austin music scene and has photographed musical performances often. When the South by Southwest conference began in 1987 Sells signed up as a volunteer "audience tender." After a couple years he began bringing his camera and photographing the event at the same time. Eventually he began volunteering as a photographer. His music photography documents his particular interest in women performers.

Sells, for whom photography is more of a hobby than a profession, shot with film until 2012 when his camera was stolen, and he then switched to digital photography. Sells had an exhibition of work in the late 2000s at Manuel's Restaurant on Congress Avenue showing the likes of Sara Hickman, Kim Miller, Patrice Pike and others.

Scope and Contents

119 4x6" photographs document the South by Southwest Music (SXSW) music festival and conference in Austin, Texas from 1994 to 2002 and 2010. The photographs depict singers and bands performing at various venues, panel discussions, the annual golf tournament, softball games, and various candid scenes from the festival. Many local Austin musicians, including Daniel Johnston, Seela Misra, and Jon Dee Graham, are among the bands pictured. Women performers are particularly well represented in this collection. Two photographs of the creator are in the collection, and the photographers of these images are noted. Photographs from 1995-1996 and 2003-2009 are not present in the collection, and 2000 and 2001 are better represented than other years. All photographs are black-and-white unless otherwise noted.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in one series, Photographs, which is divided into nine subseries by year. Within each year grouping, photographs are organized by subject in alphabetical order. A subseries of undated items is at the end.
