Biographical Note

Photographer Martha Grenon grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Knowing that she wanted to be an artist, she attended the Pratt Institute in New York City from 1963-1968, earning a degree in Industrial Design. Since then she has worked as a graphic designer and photographer.

In the 1970s she lived in Corfu, Greece. Being in such close proximity to Albania, a country closed off from the rest of the world, influenced much of her creative work. Grenon first visited Albania in 1992 and since then has also traveled to Kosovo and Macedonia, documenting the region's transition from communism to democracy. She has received grants from ArtLink Collaborative Projects to work on photographic projects with young people in Kosovo. She has continued to work on projects related to Eastern Europe, including "The Bringing of the Bones: an Albanian Odyssey," "Kosova 2000," and "All The Remains: Life, Death and Rebirth: Kosova 1996-2002."

Grenon lives in Austin, Texas, home to a vibrant music scene including the South by Southwest music festival. She was awarded a Volunteer in the Arts award in 1992 by the City of Austin, a Texas Photographic Society Members Only Grant in 1997, and was nominated for artist of the year by the Austin Critics Table in 2004.

Arrangement

The arrangement maintains the organization created by the photographer. The photographs are organized in one series and sub-series are organized by year. For each year there are six to 19 photographs, except for 2001 which consists of only one item. The undated sub-series at the end also contains only one photograph which was likely taken in 1989.
