Austin (Tex.). Boards and Commissions. Austin Convention and Visitor Bureau, Inc. Records
An Inventory of the Collection
The Austin (Texas) City Council passed ordinance no. 861120-J on November 20, 1986 that established the non-profit, no-stock Austin Convention and Visitor Bureau, Inc. (although the official name in the articles of incorporation was Austin Convention and Visitor Bureau, Inc. the Corporation was often referred to as the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, Inc.) for the purpose to plan and develop convention and tourism promotional activities and projects. A board of directors was appointed by City Council and made responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Corporation, including hiring the Executive Director, defining the Corporation's goals to promote tourism and conventions, and developing the budget. During the August 24, 1989 City Council Meeting Ordinance No. 890824-F was passed to repeal Ordinance 861120-J. In this ordinance the City dissolved Austin Convention and Visitor Bureau, Inc. because it was determined that the duties could be more effectively performed by the City Manager, with the assistance of an advisory commission. The 1989 ordinance also established the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau department and the Austin Convention and Visitors Commission, which assumed the duties of the Corporation. Seven years later, in 1996, the City passed Ordinance No. 960815-J approving the creation of a another non-profit corporation called the Austin Convention and Visitor's Bureau (commonly referred to as the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau) and eventually the Commission was dissolved because all Commission activities ceased when the non-profit corporation was established.
The Board of Directors' meeting agendas, correspondence, financial reports and annual work plans in this collection document the activities of Austin Convention and Visitor Bureau, Inc.'s Board of Directors from September 1987 until the dissolution of the Corporation in September of 1989. Included is information about tourism marketing plans, the site location search for a new civic/convention center, promotion of heritage (historic preservation) and minority tourism, issues with performance audits and the dissolution of the Corporation.
