Austin (Tex.). Boards and Commissions. Austin Convention and Visitors Commission Records
An Inventory of the Collection
Boards and commissions are an established feature of Austin's municipal government and provide citizens an opportunity to participate in the City's governmental process and lend a more diverse viewpoint for the City Council to consider. They are created by the City Council as the need arises and dissolved if the need for the particular board or commission ends or if the purpose of the board/commission needs to be altered.
The Austin Convention and Visitors Commission was established by Austin City Council Ordinance No. 890824-F in 1989 for the purpose of advising City Council on planning and developing convention and visitor promotional activities and projects. In this ordinance the City was dissolved the existing non-profit corporation the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, Inc. because it was determined that the duties could be more effectively performed by the City Manager, with the assistance of an advisory commission.
The January 31, 1991 Austin City Council minutes contain a discussion of repealing Ordinance No. 890824-F creating the Convention and Visitors Commission however the commission still existed in the 1992 City Code (Section 2-4-65) and the recodified City Code in 2003 (Section 2-1-211). However, in 1996 the City passed an ordinance approving the creation of a non-profit corporation called the Austin Convention and Visitor's Bureau for the purpose of planning and developing convention and tourism promotional activities and projects. And then, according to the June 22, 2006 Austin City Council meeting minutes, the Austin Convention and Visitors Commission was recommended for elimination because all commission activities ceased when the non-profit corporation Austin Convention and Visitor's Bureau was created in 1996. Ordinance No. 20060622-015 amended the City Code to abolish the Convention and Visitors Commission.
The collection contains materials dating from the orientation Convention and Visitors Commission meeting held on March 1, 1990 and then the monthly meeting through September 25, 1990. The meeting agendas and minutes, member lists, copies of city ordinances, and Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau financial records and productivity reports document the first seven months of the Commission's activities.
