Administrative History

The Southwestern Ice & Cold Storage Company was headquartered and operated in Austin, Texas from the 1940s through the 1970s. The company manufactured and delivered ice as well as stored food products (generally meat) in a cold environment. In addition to the Austin facilities there were additional Texas operations in Brenham, Burnet, Gonzales, Luling, Taylor and Yoakum. According to the Austin City Directories the business started out at 315 Guadalupe Street, Austin but moved to 301 Colorado Street soon after opening. The address remained 301 Colorado Street until 1969 when it changed to 311 Colorado. In 1972 the address changed to 300 Lavaca Street until 1980 when Southwestern Ice & Cold Storage Company was listed as a division of Frostex Foods. In addition to the main address there are several plants or "stations" listed in various locations around Austin including 311 Red River, 1901 E. 12th Street, 315 Guadalupe Street, and 2817 Guadalupe Street. From the late 1940s to the late 1950s the company also ran Southwestern Foods, Inc. at 215 W. 2nd Street, Austin, which provided food lockers (freezers) to the citizens of Austin.
