Clark, Jenny Jenny Clark Video Collection 1988-1995 9 linear feet (9 boxes) Jenny Clark was an independent video producer for Austin's Public Access Television channels (ACTV) focusing on environmental issues. The collection contains video tapes (VHS and 3/4") produced for cablecast on ACTV channels 10 and 16 from 1988 through 1995. The textual materials provide additional information about the programs and events surrounding Austin's environmental community at the time. Jenny Clark was an independent video producer for Austin's Public Access Television channels (ACTV) focusing on environmental issues. In September of 1988 she completed training on basic portable camera, SVHS and basic editing certification at the Austin Community Access Television studio located at 310 Dawson Road. She received an ACTV award in 1989 in the "Cooperation" category for volunteering in camera work, direction and production assistance. Also in 1989 The Video Shorts Festival selected "Billy and the Nuke" as a "Judges Pick" for a humorous look at nuclear waste in a song. In 1992 she was awarded an ACTV "Certificate of Excellence" for the categories of education and music and also received special recognition for Save Our Springs short videos.

A longtime environmental activist, she sought to educate TV viewers about recycling. Over the years her work became focused on the protection of Barton Springs' pool in Zilker Park. Her interest in the subject was personal because while living without central air conditioning, she learned that an evening swim in the 68 degree waters would cool the body's core temperature to allow for a restful night. Later interests included property management for wildlife and songbirds and labeling genetically engineered (GE) foods.

Scope and Contents

The programs in the Jenny Clark video collection include the history of the fights over the development of the Barton Springs recharge zone and documentations of benefits, music, poetry, political rally's, meetings, press events and lectures from the experts about the issues. A series of public forums by We Care Austin features speakers and audience questions about environmental issues covering the landfill, endangered species and ongoing political battles to protect Barton Creek. The "Ground Truth" series features Earth First! field investigator Tim Jones as he explores pollution sources in the sensitive Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer recharge zone. A regular Barton Creek update segment was produced in a live studio program called "Stop the News". Other environmental programs cover a protest over the Alaskan oil spill, a promotion of Austin's solar energy plant, a photo essay of the states "Beach Buddy" clean up program and an elementary education program about recycling with special guest environmental troubadour Bill Oliver. The last program produced was in 1995 after the state legislature interfered with Austin's water quality ordinances, called "Austin's Water Slaughter". In 2001, Clark and Dr. Neil Carmen were guests on Sister Susan Mika's Catholic TV show on San Antonio's public access channel, "Sacred Earth" discussing the health and environmental risks of genetically engineered foods. Other programs about genetically engineered foods include interviews and lectures from farmers and ordinary citizens.

Box 1 (tapes #1-13) includes music and poetry related videos with press releases, program logs, information on Bill Oliver, as well as Jenny Clark's personal papers and correspondence. Box 2 (Tapes # 14-24) contains "We Care Austin Presents a Public Forum" and the press releases on the series. Box 3 (tapes #25-39) includes tapes on the "Battle for Barton Creek, What Now?" series and research material. Box 4 (tapes #40-51) includes "Ground Truth" a series with Earth First! Field Investigator Tim Jones along with the press releases and video logs. Box 5 (tapes #52-64) includes more of the "Ground Truth" Earth First! Field Investigator Tim Jones series and the tape "Buddhists Bless Barton Springs" along with press releases and video logs. Box 6 (tapes #65-79) includes videos on topics such as Save Our Springs, Earth Day Austin, and various topics on Barton Springs and research material relating to the tapes, including newsletters, flyers, legal correspondence, petitions, and endangered species issues. Box 7 (tapes #80-92) includes video productions on recycling, solar energy and environmental issues, as well as press releases and photos pertaining to the tapes. Box 8 (tapes 93-106) includes "Only One Sky Peace Rally", "There's No Such Thing as a Free Kilowatt" and "Now Hear This" video productions with press releases and production notes. Box 9 (tapes # 107-127) includes video series "Stop The News", "Sacred Earth", "Seeds of Deception" and "Biotech Bullies") as well as production notes and other info on genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

On February 23, 1995, the Austin city council rejected a proposed lawsuit settlement "agreement" with Freeport McMoRan Properties. The result was a series of Austin bashing bills passed by the 1995 Texas Legislature.
