Order of the Violet Crown RecordsAn Inventory to the Collection
Administrative HistoryThe Order of the Violet Crown was originally a group of local civic leaders that got together to launch a yearly spring festival to be held on San Jacinto Day. In April of 1920 the first Violet Crown San Sam celebration was held, complete with a parade, coronation of a Queen and a royal ball. The name of the festival was the result of contest with the winning entry invoking both San Jacinto and Sam Houston in the festival name. The membership of the Order was limited to 100 peoples and most members were from other civic organizations such as the Austin Lions Club, Rotary, Kiwanis, Young Mens Business League, and Business and Professional Women's Club. In 1923 the Order drew up bylaws and filed Articles of Incorporation and moved the festival to the fall to coincide with the Texas State Exposition. Interest in the organization and the festival waned in the later years of the 1920s.
