Biographical Note

Hank Todd Smith was born in Port Arthur, Texas and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He holds undergraduate degrees in marketing, from Lamar University, and journalism, from Southern Methodist University, as well as a Masters of Arts degree in advertising from the University of Texas at Austin. His professional history has included working at United Press International, Dallas, reporter-editor; with Austin and San Antonio advertising agencies; with Neal Spelce and Associates, Austin, as Creative Director; and as a partner/owner of Ghost Writers, a copywriting and marketing firm. He is also the author/editor of two books: Since 1886: A History of the Texas Society of Architects and Austin, Its Architects and Architecture, 1836-1986. He is past-president of both the Austin and San Antonio's chapters of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). His expertise in business communication led Austin Community College to ask him to serve on the Advisory Committee of the Commercial Art program to ensure that the program is effectively meeting the needs of Austin employers.

Scope and Contents

The Hank Todd Smith collection documents Smith's involvement with the Austin chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC/Austin) and the Austin Community College (ACC) Commercial Art Advisory Committee. The ACC Advisory Committee materials include board meeting minutes, correspondence, and ACC publications dating from 1979 to 1986. The IABC/Austin materials span the years 1982 through 1986 and include chapter bylaws, missions and goals; Membership Committee meeting minutes, membership lists and plans for increasing membership; and correspondence, distributed information, programs, entry forms and press releases for the 1984 and 1986 Best of Austin contest hosted by IABC/Austin.
