Administrative History

The Zilker Park Posse and the Save Barton Creek Association were organized in the late 1970s in reaction to the accelerated plans for urban development in the Barton Creek Watershed. The Zilker Park Posse was formed as a political action committee to compliment the Save Barton Creek Association, a 501 (C)(3) non-profit, informational organization.

Scope and Contents

The small collection includes materials related to the actions taken by the Zilker Park Posse to oppose proposed zoning changes in the Barton Creek area, to pass an ordinance which would regulate development in the Barton Creek watershed and to promote candidates for Austin City Council that recognize the environmental concerns of large scale development in the Barton Creek watershed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Included are a variety of documents such as legal briefs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, reports, maps Planning Commission meeting agendas and flyers related to Zoning case C14-78-105 and Zoning case C14-82-087, both requests to change zoning. Zoning Case C14-78-105 requested a zoning change from a Residence District to one that would allow for apartment buildings, offices and general retail for a 108 acre parcel in the Barton Creek/MoPac Boulevard area that Tom Bradfield, Donald Cummins and Robert Mueller, Jr. wanted to develop. This zoning case led the City Council to consider enacting an ordinance to minimize the impact of development on the water quality of Barton Creek and Barton Springs and the collection includes two versions of this ordinance. Zoning case C14-82-087 was also a request for a zoning change from Residence District to one that would allow for apartment buildings on a 3-plus acre site in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood. Also included in the collection are election flyers, newspaper clippings and endorsement flyers for candidates that the Zilker Park Posse supported for the 1981 City Council race.
