Frank Rundell Papers and DrawingsAn Inventory of the Collection
Biographical NoteFrank Roscoe Rundell was born in Austin, Texas on September 29, 1895 to John Lyman Rundell and Cleo Pearl Ainsworth Rundell. Rundell started working with his uncle L. M. Ainsworth, who was a general contractor, at age twelve. After graduating from high school in 1914 he went to work for Graber Construction Company in Dallas, Texas. He returned to Austin in 1915, and returned to work for Mr. Ainsworth until 1916 and he went into business for himself as a general contractor starting the Frank R. Rundell Company. Rundell married Verona Turner, daughter of Newton and Belle Turner, in 1917. The couple had three children: Nona, Allen and Addie (who died at age five). Other than the two years he worked for Beaumont Ship Building and Dry Dock Co. and was in the Army in 1917-1918, Rundell operated the construction company in Austin, Texas until his retirement in the 1970s. Rundell was involved in a variety of community organizations such as the Austin Kiwanis Club, Texas Society for Crippled Children, Austin Cerebral Palsy Center, Odd Fellow, Easter Seals and was one of the founding members of the Austin Evaluation Center. Verona (Nona) died in 1983 and Frank followed in 1986. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe Frank Rundell collection is arranged into three series: I. Personal Papers, II. Jefferson County Guaranty Bank & Trust Company of Beaumont, Texas Records and III. Architectural Drawings. The majority of the Personal Papers series (1914-1920) consists of personal correspondence between Frank Rundell (sometime referred to as Roscoe) and his wife Verona Turner Rundell (Nona). The correspondence begins in 1914 before the couple was married and Frank was working for Graber Construction in Dallas, Texas. The correspondence continues after their marriage while Frank was working for the Beaumont Ship Building and Dry Dock Co. and when he was drafted into the Army during World War I. Of interest is his discussion with his wife about Beaumont Ship Building encouraging all its draft age workers to fill out an exemption form to allow them continue working because they were so desperate for workers. There is also discussion about the "Spanish flu" epidemic at Army bases and Nona warning Frank to talk all the necessary precautions while he was stationed at Camp Travis in San Antonio, Texas. In addition, there is a limited amount of correspondence from family members to Frank and Nona. The remaining personal papers consist of materials related to his correspondence classes in Architecture and Structural Design from the International Correspondence Schools, a Notice of Classification for World War I and a few financial documents. The Jefferson County Guaranty Bank & Trust Company of Beaumont, Texas Records series (1919-1920) contains correspondence, legal documents, financial records, subscription and account books regarding the organization and incorporation of the bank. Rundell was a promoter of the bank (sold subscriptions) and the records include letters of introduction and correspondence regarding his membership in the International Longshoreman's Association and the Union's official endorsement of the bank. The Architectural Drawings series (1937-1969, undated) contains over one hundred sets of architectural drawings for buildings constructed by the Frank Rundell Company. The majority of the drawings are for new or remodeled residential buildings in Austin, Texas and are undated. In addition there are a few commercial and ecclesiastical buildings. Return to the Table of Contents Administrative InformationCustodial HistoryThe correspondence and the Jefferson County Guaranty Bank & Trust Company materials were found in the attic of a house on West Avenue, Austin, Texas and donated to the Austin History Center in 2012.
