Billy Perkins Posters
An Inventory of the Collection
Billy Perkins has been designing rock posters, CD packages, and other graphics for more than twenty years. A self-taught illustrator, Perkins learned to draw as a child by studying comic-book art, album covers, and psychedelic rock posters of the 1960s. He received a BFA in Commercial Art from Texas State University.
The tagline "Good Ideas Thru Bad Living" was born in 1992 when Perkins became a freelancer after having served for two years as art director for Austin's largest screen-printing shop. Since then, he has designed posters and CD packages for numerous bands, including Van Halen, Cheech & Chong, Cheap Trick, Arcangels, Alice in Chains, The Black Crowes, The Kills, Patti Smith, and Slayer. Perkins's work has appeared in several books and publications, including Art of Modern Rock, Swag 2, Gigposters: Rock Art of the 21st Century, and Classic Rock Magazine. He has received the Austin Chronicle's "Best Concert Poster" award four times.
The collection contains approximately thirty-seven music posters advertising shows at Austin venues such as Antone’s, La Zona Rosa, Austin Music Hall, Emo’s, Continental Club, The Backyard, and the Steamboat. The collection also contains several posters for other Texas and national venues. Bands and musicians such as Double Trouble, Los Lonely Boys, Ted Nugent, Slayer, Arcangels, X, The Donnas, Ok Go, Grady, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Old 97’s, Dale Watson, Robert Cray Band, Blue October, David Bowie, Vallejo, Audioslave, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, The Scabs, Patti Smith, and Cheap Trick are represented. Billy Perkins also created posters for the Austin Music Awards (several years) and the KGSR Anniversary Concerts (KGSR 13th Anniversary Concert & Broadcast (2003), KGSR 12th Anniversary Concert & Broadcast (2002), KGSR 8th Anniversary Concert & Broadcast (1998), KGSR 7th Anniversary Concert & Broadcast (1997), KGSR 9th Anniversary Concert & Broadcast (1999), KGSR 10th Anniversary Concert & Broadcast (2000).
