Administrative History

The Texas Cable Network (TCN) was a cable programming service producing 20 hours a week of original programming during the period of March 1983 through October 1986. They served the top twelve cable markets in Texas with ‘lifestyle’ programming which was cablecast to an estimated four million households. In Austin TCN shared cable channel 15 with the Financial News Network. They also produced the popular local public access show Ask Livia Live. Staff of TCN included Paul Smolen (CEO), Carla Jenkins (VP Sales and Marketing), Terry Dyke (VP Information Systems), Brian Godinez (VP Production), and production staff which included Tom Taylor, Eric Graham, Chip Morris, Adrian Godinez, and David Brown.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of thirteen U-matic (3/4") videotapes produced by Texas Cable Network, with samples of their various half hour entertainment shows. These include a dining and travel show (Portfolio), an exercise and fitness show (Two Mile Workout) consumer electronics and personal computer show Online, gardening (Down to Earth with John Dromgoole), quarter horse racing (Texas Quarterhorse), fishing (Fishing Texas) and tennis (Lone Star Tennis). All shows were thirty minutes in length. In addition there is a sample of the public access show Ask Livia Live and the TCN animated logo which was one of the first in the industry, created on the Dubner multiprocessor graphics computer.
