Abstract: The Washington family lived in Austin, Texas from 1942-1947. These records contain photocopies of personal records, photos, and receipts that document the life of the Washington family during the time that they lived in Travis County. Additionally, there is an obituary for Dorothy Nell Washington Hewitt, the niece of J.W. Washington who owned and operated Dot's Place restaurant in Austin, TX.

Biographical Note

J.W. Washington and Geraldine Theresa Harvey Washington were married in Austin, Texas in 1942. In 1944, Mr. Washington enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Ord, California. While Mr. Washington was serving in the Army, Geraldine Washington lived and worked in Austin. She supplemented the family's income by working as a pianist for New Hope Baptist Church and David Chapel Baptist Church. After being discharged from the Army, Mr. Washington began barber training at Capitol Barber College in Austin, Texas. The Washington family eventually left Austin and settled in Victoria, Texas.

Dorothy Nell Washington Hewitt was the niece of J.W. Washington. She owned and operated a soul food restaurant in Austin, Texas called Dot's Place. The restaurant eventually burned down, but was not rebuilt.

Scope and Contents

This small collection contains photocopies of personal and family related material covering the period of 1942-2010. The Personal Documents folder contains documents such as a letter from the Veteran's Administration regarding vocational training for Mr. Washington. The Receipts folder contains receipts from area businesses. The obituary folder contains an obituary for Dorothy Nell Washington Hewitt, the niece of Mr. Washington and the owner of Dot's Place Restaurant.
