Inspired by attending the New Music Seminar in 1986, Roland Swenson, Louis Jay Meyers, Louis Black, and Nick Barbaro decide to launch the SXSW Music and Media conference in Austin, Texas in 1987. Starting as a small, regional conference SXSW has grown over the years, adding the SXSW Film and Media Festival in 1994, and the SXSW Multimedia Festival in 1995, renamed the Interactive Festival in 1998. SXSW is now known as an international event in Austin, with an economic impact of $167 million generated in the city in 2011.

SXSW, Inc. began in 1986, as a regional music conference and has evolved into the international, multi-million dollar music, film and interactive conferences that make up SXSW today. This collection is a composite of documents, print materials and recordings generated by SXSW over its 25 years of existence. The collection is divided into four series: Textual Materials, Photographs, Posters, and Recordings.
The first series, Textual Materials, includes New Music Seminar documents and conference correspondence from the early years, two office manuals, a collection of memorabilia for conference attendees, economic impact studies from 2007-2011, Best of Press clippings from 1999-2009, Van Morrison's contract and rider agreements from 2008, copies of the SXSW trademark registration paperwork and the SXSWSUX manifesto.
The Photographs series consists of a selection of images taken by various photographers and attendees. These include photos of performances, panels, staff, and conference attendees.
The third series, Posters, consists of SXSW posters from 1986-2011 including Music, Film and Interactive (formerly Multimedia), Austin Music Award posters, North By Northeast and NXNW posters, and Flatstock posters.
Finally, Audio Recordings is comprised of five CDs of acts performing at the earlier conferences in the convention center, recorded between 1992 and 1997.
