Biographical Note

The photo album appears to have belonged to Anna Hornberger, formally Anna von Rosenberg. Anna was born on October 10, 1860, one of the twelve children born to Wilhelm (William) and Auguste Franziska (Anders) von Rosenberg. Accompanied by his family, William and Auguste arrived in Galveston, Texas from Germany in 1849 and moved to Austin, Texas in 1856. Anna's siblings were: Charles, married Walleska Sutor; Arthur, married Mary Holland; Earnest, married Hellena Lungkwitz; Paul, married Cornelia McCuistion; Laura, married C. von Carlowitz; Emma, married August Giesen; William, married Louise Rhode; Lina, married George G. Bissell; Frederick C., married Nina Stephens; and Mina Agnes. Anna married William C. Hornberger in 1881. A list of births included in the photo album indicates that the couple had nine children.

Scope and Contents

The photograph album contains approximately seventy portraits of family members of Anna Hornberger. Included are photographs of Anna's siblings and their respective families, as well as members of the extended family. Surnames include Giesen, von Rosenberg, Wupperman, Bissell, Linderman, Schench, Goeth, and Beckman. The photographs in the album are not captioned but the donor provided a list of names for each page and their relationship to Anna "Grandmother Hornberger" and William "Grandfather Hornberger". Given known birth dates of some of the people represented in the photo album it is estimated that the photographs date from the 1880s through the early 1900s.
