AIDS Services of Austin (ASA) originated in 1985 as a volunteer project of the Waterloo Counseling Center in Austin, Texas to educate and assist in decreasing the spread of HIV/AIDS virus and to offer aid to those individuals who have contracted the illness. Since 1987 ASA had been an independent, tax-exempt agency staffed by professional employees, lead by a board of directors and includes a work force of hundreds of active volunteers.
ASA is overseen by an Executive board comprised of voluntary members. Permanent staff for ASA consists of an Executive Director as well as Directors of specific programs and office staff. Programs within ASA change periodically with the changing needs of the community and with special, timely projects. Programs offered by ASA on a semi-permanent basis included educational services such as the Rubber Fairies and other programs coordinated by the HIV Educator offered throughout the Austin and Travis County communities. Client services offered by ASA included the Buddy Program and the Helper Programs which were volunteer programs in which a volunteer is paired with an AIDS client; case manger services for AIDS patients; legal services of AIDS patients and those affiliated with them; a food bank and an information line staffed by educated volunteers which is open to community questions. Today, ASA continues its focus on a holistic approach to living with HIV and AIDS, and advancements in treatment options reaffirm that a positive diagnosis no longer has to be the death sentence it once was. AIDS Services of Austin serves people with HIV and AIDS by providing a comprehensive array of counseling and services so that people can live their lives with independence and dignity.
